Frequently Asked Questions
The Repo Rate is the rate at which the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lends short-term money to commercial banks. When the repo rate increases, banks borrow at higher cost and pass this on to customers via higher loan interest rates (EMIs increase). When repo rate falls, EMIs tend to decrease.
The RBI Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meets every two months (6 times a year) to review and announce changes to key policy rates. The decisions are based on inflation targets, economic growth, and global factors.
Repo Rate is for short-term (overnight) lending with securities as collateral. Bank Rate is for long-term lending without collateral. Bank Rate is typically higher than Repo Rate and is used as a benchmark for long-term financial instruments.
